Academic Advising

Academic Counselors
http://ps.uci.edu/~stuaff/ac.html
One of the first things every new student at UCI needs to do is to visit their Academic Counselor to plan a course schedule. Freshmen, you will have the chance to meet with an academic advisor in your school (or the Division of Undergraduate Education if you are Undecided/Undeclared) during SPOP. Transfer students, you will be contacted by the counseling office of your school about new student advising over the summer. Once school begins, Academic Counselors and school Peer Advisors will be your best resources to help navigate through the maze of requirements and classes.

Summer Orientation (SPOP)
http://www.dos.uci.edu/orientation/
Freshmen, you will visit your counselor over the summer during SPOP - the Student Parent Orientation Program. SPOP sessions are held throughout the summer. Please note that the Transfer Success program does NOT include academic advising - it is strictly an orientation program. SPOP registration is an online process. Click the link above for up to date information. Please keep in mind that SPOP is mandatory for incoming freshmen.

Registration
http://www.reg.uci.edu/registrar/soc/webreg.html
Registration requires two actions: enroll in classes and pay your fees.

Enrolling in classes can be a bit tricky the first time, but you’ll soon get the hang of it. As an incoming freshman, you will register for classes during SPOP. New transfer students, you will be informed of your enrollment time when you attend academic advising. If you later need to make adjustments, you can access WebReg between 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. It is usually helpful to open the Schedule of Classes in a separate window while you are using WebReg to be able to see all your options at once.

In future quarters, enrollment windows begin opening on Monday of week 8 of the preceding quarter. Check StudentAccess for your window’s exact date and time.

View your ZOT Account Online for your amount due. Pay your fees by the fee payment deadline. Missing the deadline results in a $50 late service charge and all your classes are dropped.

General Catalogue
Don't forget to read the General Catalogue. The General Catalogue is your guidebook to the academic requirements while you are here at UCI. Sometimes the requirements for classes and/or graduation change. The General Catalogue is your contract with the university.

Exams
Final examinations are required for all undergraduate courses except for a few labs and studio courses. Usually finals and midterms are written exams. A finals schedule is published on the Registrar's website and on the online Schedule of Classes. If you miss a final, see information about "Incomplete" grades and "NRs" in the Academic Regulations and Procedures section in the UC Irvine General Catalogue.

Grades
Your quarterly grades are available online on StudentAccess the Friday night proceeding finals week. A complimentary student transcript is available from the Registrar's Office the following working day. At the close of the quarter, you may leave a stamped, first-class, self-addressed envelope with the Registrar's Office so your grades can be mailed to you.

You may order an official transcript of your academic record through the Registrar's Office; the fee, paid to the Cashier's Office, is $10 per copy. Any outstanding debts you have to the University must be paid to the Cashier's Office in full before your transcript can be released.

Academic probation
As an undergraduate, you will be subject to academic probation if, at the end of any quarter, your GPA for the quarter or your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0. If your GPA falls below 1.5 for any quarter, or if you fail to raise your cumulative GPA to 2.0 after being on probation for two consecutive quarters, you will be subject to disqualification. You may also be placed on academic probation if you are not making satisfactory progress towards your degree, as defined by the School of your major. Should you wish to appeal probation or disqualification, contact the Undergraduate Counseling Office of your school or department.

Withdrawal from the University
If you decide to leave UC Irvine during the quarter and have paid fees, you must complete an official Cancellation/Withdrawal Form available from the Registrar's Office. Submit the form, signed by your dean, to the Registrar's Office. The withdrawal process is time sensitive for the purpose of refunds and notations on your record.

The Cancellation/Withdrawal Form may be filed by mail or fax if necessary. Students who fail to file a Cancellation/Withdrawal Form may receive failing grades in courses and severely jeopardize their academic standing at the University. In extenuating circumstances, such as illness or emergency, you should notify the Registrar's Office as soon as possible in order to initiate withdrawal procedures. Undergraduate students who wish to withdraw do not need to submit a Cancellation/Withdrawal Form if they have not yet paid fees for the quarter from which they wish to withdraw. If you withdraw from a quarter and have paid fees for the following quarter you must either file a Readmission Form to attend the following quarter or another Cancellation/Withdrawal form to not attend the following quarter. A cancellation or "stop payment" of a check used for registration will not withdraw you from your courses or cancel your registration. Health Insurance may not be refunded. See the back of the form for details.

If you have received financial aid and are leaving school, whether you are graduating, taking a leave of absence, transferring to another school, or dropping out for a portion or all of a quarter or longer, you must contact Financial Aid for an exit interview. You should also notify the Registrar before you leave to file the necessary paperwork. Any refund is returned to Financial Aid.

Readmission
If you withdraw from UC Irvine or miss one or more quarters, you will need to contact the Dean of your major for Readmission. Deadlines: November 1 for winter quarter; February 1 for spring quarter; August 1 for fall quarter. A non-refundable $60 application fee will be charged to the Zot Bill or is payable by mail to Regents-UC.

Official transcripts for work taken at other institutions must be submitted to the Admissions Office to receive credit.

Academic Assistance to Students
A wide range of programs offering academic assistance is provided through the Division of Undergraduate Education's LARC and SAAS offices.

The Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC) provides academic assistance to all undergraduate students, including a variety of services designed to help students acquire the skills they need to succeed at UC Irvine and to achieve their academic and professional goals.

The Center offers tutorials, adjuncts, workshops, classes, and individual counseling. It also offers support in all forms of academic reading and writing.
