Computing

The UCI computing environment is very diverse and we do not make any recommendations for single computer vendors.

The first thing you should do to be a part of our electronic enviroment is activate your UCInetID, your online electronic ID. Please make sure that you don't tell anyone your password because your UCInetID is used for many services including the Electronic Educational Enviroment (EEE - online class materials, assignment grades, discussions) and WebReg (online class registration) .

Click here to activate your UCInetID now!

For more information, including buying a new system and recommended specifications, please download and print this guide: Computing @ UC Irvine (available soon).

Network and Academic Computing or NACS runs the campus computer network and other computer services like Webmail and UCInet Mobile Access.

If you are living on campus, please be aware that Residential Network Services (Resnet) will block your system if your computer does not meet the following requirements:

  • Fully patched with all critical updates.
  • Anti-virus software installed with most current updates.
  • Automatic updates turned on with automatic download and install option enabled.
To make sure your system is not a threat to the network, you will be required to install a program called Cisco Clean Access Agent when you first connect to the Internet from campus. Please also note that once on campus, you can get McAfee VirusScan for free from the Resnet web site.

It is important to make sure that you keep your anti-virus and your system patched and updated to help us maintain a secure computing environment. Systems that are not patched or systems that may be involved in commercial activities or illegal activities (eg. uploading music or movies) will be blocked from the campus internet and the user could face criminal, civil, and academic penalties. Please see the UCI Computing policy for more information.

Please Note - UCI recommends using the following types of programs but does not make any recommendations of the company or their products. We just want to provide a broad range of resources to you.
