Getting to, from, and around UC Irvine
Getting around UC Irvine is relatively simple. The best methods are walking and biking to and from class. (Be aware that biking is prohibited on Ring Road between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and skateboards and motorized scooters are prohibited at all times.) You may, however, bike on any bike path or bike lane and on the inner ring of Aldrich Park at any time. UCI recently opened a new dedicated bike path from Aldrich Park directly to the ARC, Arroyo Vista, and Vista Del Campo.
ASUCI operates free on-campus shuttles. There is a main campus shuttle (which runs about every 8 minutes and is free), an Arroyo Vista/ARC/Admin shuttle (~every 8 minutes, free), a Vista Del Campo shuttle (~every 8 minutes, free). An off-campus shuttle is also offered to the Parkwest apartment complex and to the Newport Beach Area. Please check the ASUCI shuttle website for related fees, schedules, and bus stops. Shuttles ae wheelchair accessible. For information on disability related needs contact the Disability Services Center at (949) 824-7484 or in Building 313 in Engineering Gateway.
If you live off-campus, you can make use of the U-Pass program, which gives you free unlimited bus rides throughout all of Orange County on all OCTA buses. You can avoid purchasing an expensive parking permit altogether by parking at one of several park & ride locations and taking a short bus ride to campus. To ride the bus for free, simply swipe your UCI ID card when you board the bus. Your UCI ID card, obtained from UCItems, must be encoded for the U-Pass every year at UCItems or the Parking and Transportation Office. If you live even further away, Metrolink and Amtrak trains connect to UCI via OCTA lines 470 (Tustin Station) & 59 (Santa Ana Station) directly, and 79 via 86 (Irvine Station). Parking and Transportation offers a rebate of 20% of the cost of 10-day and monthly train passes. Please turn in your pass once it is completely utilized.
The nearest airport to UC Irvine is John Wayne Airport (SNA). There are private fixed-rate airport shuttles available to get you to and from the airport. Alternatively, a taxi-ride costs about $15 or OCTA busses 53 (via 59 or 79) and 470 (morning only) also take you to the airport.
If you still prefer to purchase a parking permit, you can do so online or at "PTK" kiosks located throughout campus at the beginning of the quarter. NOTE: Please visit the parking website to see what permit type you are eligible for and where the permit is valid. Some permits are restricted to certain locations. The information is also printed on the paper your permit comes on. Locations and prices are subject to change for each new academic year (July 1 - June 30). On-campus residents can only purchase resident permits for lots near their residence halls. When you purchase your permit, either online or in the Parking Office, you will be given the option to purchase only those permits you are eligible for.
Please be aware that UCI parking is not allowed in business parking lots adjacent to UCI. Vehicles parked in these lots for UCI parking are subject to towing.
